What YOU should know about CPVC and Orlando Water!
We at Emerald Plumbing feel compelled to alert our customers of the dangers of having CPVC Pipe in your home or business.
In our personal opinion, what makes CPVC so dangerous is it will simply become brittle with age due to the aggressive water (very high chlorine content). We started to become concerned about ten years ago and confronted the manufactures Rep who admitted that they were in essence experiencing problems with the product going brittle. The manufacturer proceeded to drop their warranty from 50 years to a 10 year “limited” that is non-transferable and does not cover damage, only the repair.
We instrumented some very strict rules regarding CPVC which include that we shut down the home or building before we start any repair for fear of the pipe snapping when turning off an angle stop.
We find the CPVC becomes brittle at the eight to ten year old mark and is more prone to failure on the hot side.
It recently came to our attention that most Home Builders have switched from CPVC to Pex due to the high failure rate. Considering the CPVC is cheaper and easier to use in new construction than Pex.
